Powerful typhoon makes landfall in Japan, snarling traffic in Tokyo

Tokyo shuts down as Typhoon Faxai advances with 200kmh winds

Record-breaking winds cut power to 900,000 homes.

An 87-year-old man died after being crushed by a fallen tree in Chiba Prefecture, while a 47-year-old died while he was fixing a power generator at Maritime Self-Defense Force's Yokosuka base in Kanagawa Prefecture, Kyodo said, citing police.

"I was prepared to wait".

With help from the military, officials dispatched water tanker trucks to the affected areas, she said.

Faxai is now travelling north at 25km/h and is expected to hit northeastern Japan.

A powerful typhoon in Japan has left more than 100 flights canceled, thousands of travelers stranded at the airport, and almost 1 million households without power.

The typhoon is now forecast to move northeast away from Japan and into the open Pacific over the next day, with maximum wind speeds expected to weaken to 26 miles per hour by Tuesday, according to JMA.

The storm, one of the strongest to hit Tokyo in decades, had passed by the time the England team landed but transport to the team hotel in Shiodome was still heavily delayed.

A tree fell onto an overhead power line between Shinagawa and Osaki stations in Tokyo and railway crossing equipment was also toppled by wind on the Yokosuka Line, according to JR East. The company had reduced services between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka and moved up the schedule for the end of operations the previous day.

The other global airport serving Tokyo, Haneda - located in the south of the greater metropolitan area - was not affected as much as Narita by the 15th typhoon of the season.

Authorities issued non-compulsory evacuation warnings to more than 390,000 people, as forecasters cautioned the rain and wind could reach "record" proportions. Scaffolding outside a multistory parking lot at Haneda airport collapsed.

A typhoon blew across the Tokyo metropolitan area today, killing one person and causing dozens of injuries, while disrupting rush-hour travel and knocking out power.

The estimated rainfall over the 24-hour period through 6 a.m. on September 10 was 150 mm in the Tohoku region and 100 mm in the Kanto-Koshin region. On Sunday night, Faxai began plowing its way up the bay, bringing unsafe winds inland as it passed just west of Chiba City and making landfall early Monday. The last such occurrence was in August 2016.
