Our patron John Bercow to stand down as Commons Speaker

John Bercow

There were unprecedented scenes of chaos and anger in the House of Commons overnight as opposition MPs staged a protest against the suspension - a prorogation that House of Commons' Speaker John Bercow called "an act of executive fiat".

John Bercow is set to become the first Speaker in 230 years not to be offered a peerage when he quits next month.

"The Speaker can not but allow Parliament to have its say on what it wants to do".

'With bullying claims, his Brexit bias and a willingness to ride roughshod over established procedures, this Speaker has undermined public faith in Parliament'.

"He's contravened some conventions and for that, it means his legacy is somewhat in doubt, really, as whether it's a positive or negative".

In 2009, Gordon Brown faced controversy approving a peerage for former Speaker Michael Martin, who stood down after an expenses scandal.

"He wants to make sure a Remain Parliament elects his successor and before that he is hanging around to oversee the process when the Prime Minister comes back from the summit of European Union leaders".

The 56 year-old said he made a promise to his wife and three children that the 2017 general election would be his last.

Though Bercow said that he had planned on stepping down for family reasons, his departure comes amid a wave of deselections and defections within the Conservative Party.

A Government source said they would be "hugely surprised" if Bercow was elevated to the upper chamber, as is customary for speakers leaving office.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn praised Bercow for being a "superb" speaker.

Mr Bercow said he wanted the election for the next speaker to happen "when all members have some knowledge of the candidates". If, as expected, lawmakers reject the government's attempt to call an election, he said he would quit on October 31 - the day Britain is now due to leave the EU.

Ahead of the vote, Johnson had said, "No matter how many devices this Parliament invents to tie my hands, I will strive to get an agreement in the national interest".
