On 9/11, Trump says will hit Taliban 'harder than ever'

The UN has called for fresh talks between Afghan groups after the US cancelled its discussions with Taliban negotiators one of whom is shown here in August in Qatar

The U.S. Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan, was hit by a rocket explosion early Wednesday morning on the anniversary of the September 11 attacks in NY that prompted a U.S. invasion of the country.

Early on Wednesday, the anniversary of the 9/11 attack in the USA, a powerful explosion occurred near the U.S. embassy in Afghanistan's capital Kabul.

President Trump warned on Wednesday that "an unprecedented" US military assault against the Taliban will continue.

Loudspeakers inside the office broadcast a warning that "an explosion caused by a rocket has occurred on compound" in the minutes after the strike at midnight, The Associated Press (AP) reported. Warning terrorist groups of any such misadventure in future, Trump said, "And I'm not even talking about nuclear power".

For almost a year, US envoy Zalmay Khalilzad has been negotiating with the Taliban on issues including a USA troop withdrawal and Taliban guarantees to keep Afghanistan from again becoming a launch pad for global terror attacks.

US President Donald Trump ended the negotiations as they were reported to be on the verge of a conclusion citing Taliban attacks that killed US military personnel. As part of the proposed deal, the U.S. would withdraw 5,400 troops from Afghanistan within 20 weeks.

The Taliban regime that had sheltered 9/11-mastermind Osama Bin Laden was ousted by USA -led military forces in 2001 but was never fully routed, maintaining a foothold in Afghanistan for 18 years.

Thiessen, a regular defender of Trump, penned an op-ed earlier this week in which he called the proposed invite a "shameful" insult to every American family who lost loved ones on 9/11.

"It is imperative therefore that direct talks between the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the Taliban commence as soon as possible", Yamamoto said.

Officials said there was fighting in at least 10 provinces, with the heaviest clashes in the northern regions of Takhar, Baghlan, Kunduz and Badakhshan, where the Taliban have been pressing security forces for weeks.

"It looks to me as if this one wasn't quite there", she said.

Pompeo said the United States won't release the pressure until the Taliban is serious about peace. The bombing left 12 people dead, including an American serviceman (the fourth United States soldier killed in two weeks) and a Romanian soldier. I said that's the end of them, get them out, and we're hitting them very hard.
