Nadal advances into US Open final against Medvedev

All eyes will be on the Arthur Ashe Stadium today, because if Williams wins, the 37 year-old will not only nab her 24th Grand Slam singles title, tying the legendary Margaret Smith Court, the current record holder, the victory would also give Williams the most U.S. Open singles titles (seven) and most U.S. Open match victories at Flushing Meadows (101).

Here we look back at the 18-time grand slam champion's record against first-timers ahead of what should be an intriguing battle with Medvedev.

Nadal has been here in the final of a Slam many, many times, while Medvedev obviously has not.

The Bulgarian was the lowest-ranked Slam semifinalist in 11 years and the lowest at the US Open since 174th-ranked Connors in 1991.

If Nadal beats Medvedev, like he did in the recent Rogers Cup final in Montreal, he will move within one of Federer's tally for the first time. It was the last time Medvedev lost.

When told that Berrettini described him as "a beast, a machine", Nadal smiled and said: "I just hope to be like this on Sunday". The energy he's showing is just awesome. "It's really unusual. I think this year before I've played like three lefties in all the year", Medvedev said. It's not going to be a amusing thing.

Nadal is rightly the favorite for the ultimate and it will nonetheless be an unbelievable shock if he didn't go away NY with a 19th Grand Slam title. Medvedev sees Nadal as super-human.

"The only thing I'm anxious about [is] physically".

Three-time champion Rafael Nadal of Spain set a blockbuster US Open men's singles final against fifth seed Daniil Medvedev of Russian Federation after both players defeated respective opponents in the semifinals on Friday.

At 23, Medvedev is just the third men's Grand Slam finalist born in the 1990s after Canada's Milos Raonic and Austria's Dominic Thiem. "He was much closer to winning in the first set, I was kind of lucky to win it". The next advantage went to Medvedev who took the game and set on a netted backhand from Dimitrov. Never before had Medvedev won a five-set match.

"After these matches, I was like, 'I don't want to lose these matches because I get insane or because I lose some concentration because of the fans, because of the referees (or) something that happens during the match", Medvedev said. "Just a amusing thing with myself, not celebrating after the match and just looking at my team. But he's totally able to manage this and to come on the court with his mind 100% ready to play his best tennis and to win the match". In his third-round victory, fans got on him for angrily snatching a towel from a ball person and tossing it away, then for holding up his middle finger against the side of his face.

He insisted those actions were atypical and vowed to become better.

"Can Medvedev become the greatest player ever?" He will know that he is going to have to grind and grind big against Nadal.

"If I able to win on Sunday, OK, will be fantastic", Nadal said. "They would scream at me", Medvedev recalled of his younger years. Dimitrov, who had beaten Federer three nights before, demonstrated both Friday. Number five Medvedev, 23, is in his first Slam final. "It's quirky. He's sneaky fast".

Nadal made light work of the big-serving South African, though, and faces another player who profited from an open draw on Sunday. We can get [1.65] on Medvedev with a 7.5 game head start, which looks a decent enough spot in what I think should be a more competitive final than many people are anticipating. "To play him in your first Grand Slam final should be... an awesome thing to live".

"I am happy about my career". But, of course, (I'm) very, very happy for everything. "I was working hard because every time I do something wrong on the court, I'm sitting with myself, I'm not like this in normal life".

"Sunday is just one more chance, that's all". If I'm able to win on Sunday, it will be fantastic.
