Magical! There will be a rare Full Moon on Friday the 13th

Full moon to happen on Friday the 13th for the first time in nearly 20 years

The closest full moon to the autumnal equinox - typically known as a "harvest moon" - is slated to rise on or shortly after Friday the 13th, depending on the time zone, in a rare moment on the lunar calendar in the northern hemisphere. In fact, the last full moon on a Friday the 13th took place in June 2014, the almanac said. According to Newsweek, if you miss your chance at seeing a Friday the 13th full moon, you're going to have to wait another 30 years.

The so-called "Harvest Moon", which is the full moon nearest to the autumnal equinox or the start of fall on Sept. 23, will be visible on Sept. 13 and into the early hours on Sept. 14, according to the Farmers' Almanac.

There hasn't been a Friday the 13th full moon since October 13, 2000, and it won't happen again until August 13, 2049, according to the Farmer's Almanac.

Here in the United Kingdom, the Harvest Moon will arrive around 5.32am BST (4.32am UTC).

Maine Farmers' Almanac astronomer Joe Rao said: "The arrival of this year's Harvest Moon will depend on which time zone you happen to live in".

"Harvest Moon" got its name because a full moon during September is around the same time farmers harvest crops.

Unless cloud cover blocks the view, the full moon is the easiest celestial event to observe.

Why is the Harvest Moon so special this year?

It is actually quite rare for the whole of the United States to experience a full moon on the date of Friday 13.

This harvest moon is also being called a "Micro Moon" because it looks smaller than usual, which will make this Harvest Moon slightly less bright than average, according to Forbes.

Mr Rao said: "To add to this Full Moon "madness", this upcoming Full Moon very almost coincides with apogee - that point in its orbit which places it at its greatest distance from the Earth: 252,100 miles away".
