Labour's Watson: It feels like a Brexit election is inevitable

Gareth Snell, the Labour MP for Stoke on Trent Central, criticised the deputy Labour leader for calling on the party to back a second referendum as a priority over a general election.

Elsewhere, shadow Brexit secretary Sir Keir Starmer will appear at the Trades Union Congress (TUC) in Brighton on Wednesday and insist Labour will not be silenced in its bid to prevent the United Kingdom leaving the EU without a deal despite the suspension of Parliament.

The Bill, which controversially led to the dismissal of more than 20 Tory MPs, received Royal Assent from the Queen on Monday and will force the Prime Minister to seek a Brexit delay if MPs have not approved a new deal, or no deal, by October 19.

"All leaders agreed that they would not support Boris Johnson's ploy to deny the people their decision by crashing us out of the European Union with no deal during a general election campaign", a spokeswoman said.

If we do see a second referendum take place, Labour's almost-certain stance is that they will back a Remain campaign but as it stands, we're still some way off from one.

'A general election might well fail to solve this Brexit chaos'.

Addressing the TUC in Brighton on Tuesday, Mr Corbyn confirmed an incoming Labour government would hold a new referendum - with Remain and a "credible" option for Leave on the ballot paper - but he has yet to say which he would support.

"Prime minister: you can hide from parliament for a few weeks, but when we return we will be ready", Starmer will say.

Brexit news: British lawmakers reject holding snap elections ahead of Brexit

He warned that Johnson was pursuing a "Trump deal Brexit", and accused him of, "hijacking the referendum result to shift even more power and wealth to those at the top".

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has outlined his desire for an election before a referendum.

"The Brexit Party wants to leave the European Union".

Owen Smith said Labour should be clear in opposing Brexit.

Corbyn also stressed Labour's plan to give workers a third of seats on company boards, and pledged to create a Workers Protection Agency to enforce rights, standards and protections at work and introduce sectoral collective bargaining to set industry-wide minimum standards.

By contrast, 77% of Remain voters, 76% of Lib Dem voters and 69% of Labour voters all say that Johnson should refrain from breaking the law on this matter. "Once we get out of here, there isn't any way to establishment-up Jeremy", one Labour source said.

Lynne Neagle, Torfaen Labour AM and a supporter of a further referendum, feared the position risked a majority Conservative government. The party's leadership has insisted it is eager for an election after the risk of a no-deal Brexit on 31 October has been ruled out.

Mr Johnson said he wanted to head to the polls next month to break the political deadlock, and accused opposition parties of making "outrageous excuses" to delay a vote.
