'Joker' Star Joaquin Phoenix Lost 52 Pounds For Titular Role

Director Todd Phillips and the Joker Joaquin Phoenix

Joaquin Phoenix's performance as the Joker - in the new movie of the same name - has been praised by nearly every critic lucky enough to see a preview of the long-awaited movie. "I think we all kind of assume what a Joker laugh is and it felt like a new, fresh way of looking at it".

Joaquin Phoenix has revealed that he "started to go mad" while preparing to take on the titular role of the Gotham City super-villain in the upcoming Joker movie.

But the star of Walk the Line and Her said he wanted to maintain the freedom of keeping the character's volatile personality in the realms of fiction. "You don't really want to define him", Phoenix said on Saturday at the film's press conference at the Venice Film Festival. "Throughout the course of shooting it felt like every day we were discovering new parts of his personality, up until the very last day", he added. It was really uncomfortable. And without a doubt-long time DC fans will be spending a lot of time unpacking the many story revelations and questions this harrowing cautionary tale raises.

Speaking to Variety magazine, he said: "I didn't refer to any past iteration of the character. It guides us, makes us work harder".

More news: Hurricane Dorian hovers Over Bahamas, makes slow approach to US

Early reviews from critics who were in attendance at the Venice Film Festival suggest that Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix, is an absolute masterpiece of a film. Most critics have emphasized that Joaquin Phoenix (Her) deserves a Best Actor Oscar nomination, while some, like Brandon Davis of comicbook.com think that the highly talented actor could probably win the prestigious trophy as well.

Joker hits cinemas on October 3.

Phoenix described the cackle he created for the character as "something that´s nearly painful". We thought this could be an exciting approach to this genre. Second, and probably more importantly, with an R-rating limiting its business prospects in ways that a typical comic-based film doesn't typically face, such a potential market response could mean that we may see more edgy and ambitious one-shots from DC and Warner Bros.in the future.
