Hong Kong school children form human chain after weekend of protests

Hong Kong protests to target airport after night of violence

Many Hong Kongers want the U.S. Congress to take up and pass the "Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act", which would punish officials in Hong Kong and mainland China if they suppress liberties and freedoms in the semi-autonomous Chinese city.

Some American legislators are pressing Trump to take a tougher stand on Hong Kong. He added he would also call on Germany to halt trade negotiations and arms sales to Hong Kong and China "until the human rights is put on the agenda".

Protesters fly U.S flags as they deliver a petition to the U.S consulate during a demonstration on September 8 in Hong Kong, China.

China denies the accusation of meddling in the city and says Hong Kong is an internal affair.

The proposed legislation appears to have bipartisan support in US Congress. House minority leader Democrat Chuck Schumer has proposed bringing it to the floor as a priority item.

Protests against Chinese governance have now entered their third month in Hong Kong, continuing after an extradition bill was pulled from the Hong Kong government.

Last month Trump suggested China should "humanely" settle the problem in Hong Kong before a trade deal is reached with Washington.

Activists started fires in the street and vandalized a Mass Transit Railway (MTR) station in the main business district of Central on Sunday after thousands rallied peacefully at the US consulate, calling for help in bringing democracy to the special administrative region. "It also means that the whole world is paying attention to Hong Kong and supporting Hong Kong".

In an indication of the growing anti-China flavor of protests, demonstrators on Sunday carried posters and stickers depicting the Chinese flag with its yellow stars rearranged into swastikas. Meant to last for at least 50 years, the deal was also known "one country-two systems", and granted Hong Kong freedom not experienced by other major cities in China. "So we call them together...caring, talking with the youngsters, talking with the police and tell them, 'don't do that to Hong Kong people, don't hit Hong Kong people".

Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam said last week that a controversial extradition bill that had spurred months of protests in the semiautonomous territory will be formally withdrawn next month when a new legislative year begins. Police stymied Saturday's effort by stationing officers in riot gear at subway stops and ferry terminals and boarding buses to check for demonstrators. Police had to use tear gas to break up demonstrators.

The US State Department has issued a travel advisory for Americans visiting Hong Kong, warning that US citizens and diplomatic staff "have been subject to a People's Republic of China propaganda campaign falsely accusing the United States of fomenting unrest in Hong Kong".

Separately, well-known Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong was released Monday, a day after he was detained at the airport following an oversight in his bail certificate.

"Only countries like United States can change the current situation", said Cathay Ng, 38.

Hong Kong police charged Wong with unlawfully organizing a public meeting outside police headquarters in June.

It should be pointed out "Wong" is anxious about what might happen if Hong Kong approves policies which go against USA interests.

The appeal for U.S. intervention comes despite President Donald Trump's characterisation of Chinese leader Xi Jinping as "a great leader who very much has the respect of his people".

Susan Reigel, from Denver, Colorado, said she arrived at the airport eight hours ahead of her flight back to the U.S.

Lam's concessions, which also included beefing up the independent police oversight committee, were met with hostility among protesters, who want her to meet the four other demands they have laid out.
