Harry Potter books could conjure 'evil spirits', school pastor says

The first Harry Potter book “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” is displayed at Sotheby’s auction house’s premises in London. A Catholic school in Tennessee has removed the Harry Potter books from its library. Associated Press files

Rebecca Hammel, superintendent of schools for the Catholic diocese of Nashville, told the Tennessean that Reehil had sent the email after an inquiry from a parent.

The long-beloved Harry Potter books have been yanked from the library shelves of St. Edward Catholic School in Nashville, evidently for fear that students will conjure "evil spirits" upon reading the wizard-centric series.

The exorcists he consulted shared his concerns, so he purged the series from the school's library.

"These books present magic as both good and evil, which is not true, but in fact a clever deception". Moreover, if a human being reads them, there are always chances for the risk of conjuring evil spirits into the presence of the person reading the text.

The school's move might surprise fans, but it's worth noting that the Harry Potter book series tops the list of most challenged books in the United States in the 21st century, according to The American Library Association.

So while the students of St. Edwards can't visit the halls of Hogwarts at school, we can only hope they can travel to those wonderful, magical world of Harry Potter while reading at home. Needless to say, if very rational religious folks were challenging the book on such a large scale, there must be truth to their belief that the Harry Potter books hold real magic power!

In response to the Tennessean, which first reported on the edict, Hammel confirmed the authenticity of the e-mail and stated that it was despatched after a mother or father requested why the books had been gone.

Despite Reehil's decision to ban the books, Hammel claims that the school district does not like to engage in censorship. The Catholic Church believes it is as much as dad and mom to find out what's applicable for his or her youngsters and "guide their sons and daughters to understand the content through the lens of our faith", she stated.

She does not mention that the controversy has died down in recent years because no Harry Potter novel has been published since 2007 and no Harry Potter movie has been released since 2011. "He also notified faculty, she said". Unfortunately, having read through the Harry Potter books myself and knowing quite a few other Potterheads who have done the same, none of us have been able to replicate even the simplest spells.yet.
