Google to pay up to $200 million to FTC on YouTube probe

YouTube Will Pay Up to $200 Million for Violating Privacy Rules

Alphabet Inc's Google will pay in the range of $150 million to $200 million (162.9 million pounds) to settle the Federal Trade Commission's investigation into YouTube's alleged violation of a certain children's privacy law, Politico reported on Friday.

The FTC's settlement with Google serves as the newest transfer towards massive tech. The settlement is set to be announced next week and will be the largest ever fine imposed for violating the Children's Online Privacy Protection Rule by collecting personal information from kids without parental consent.

Privateness teams have complained to the patron safety company that YouTube violated the Youngsters's On-line Privateness Safety Act (COPPA) by amassing private details about youngsters and utilizing it to focus on them with advertisements with out receiving their mother and father' consent.

"Once again, this FTC appears to have let a powerful company off the hook with a nominal fine for violating users' privacy online", Democratic U.S. Senator Ed Markey, a key figure behind the passage of COPPA, said in a statement. Still, there's no guarantee that kids won't just work around any restrictions implemented by Google, and there are indications that once they discover the standard YouTube experience, they won't go back to the children-friendly one. The Center for Digital Democracy, a privacy advocacy group, says the reported amount against YouTube is "woefully low". "We owe it to kids to come down hard on companies that infringe on children's' privacy and violate federal law".

YouTube has long maintained that children under 13 don't use its site without parental supervision, as its terms of service stipulate. It was reported earlier this month that Google will also stop showing targeted ads on videos likely to be watched by minors.

YouTube has reportedly been considering significant changes to protect its youngest content creators and viewers, including possibly moving all children's content to the YouTube Kids app. The service is far smaller than YouTube's primary audience of over 2 billion monthly visitors, and data show the main site is used by more children than the kids app.
