Google Earth search uncovered body of missing Florida man in retention pond

A property surveyor looking at Google Earth spotted the car on August 28 this year

The remains of a man who disappeared in Florida more than two decades ago have been found after his vehicle was discovered submerged in a pond on Google Maps. That's when Palm Beach County Sheriff's deputies were called to the Grand Isles development after a resident found a submerged vehicle in a retention pond, the Sun-Sentinel reported.

'Amazingly, the vehicle had been plainly visible on a Google Earth satellite image of the area since 2007, but apparently no one had noticed it until 2019, when a property surveyor saw the auto while looking at Google Earth, ' Moldt's cold case listing in the Charley Project says.

PBSO said the current resident used his personal drone to fly over the pond and spotted the vehicle underwater.

After they got the vehicle out, they found the skeletal remains of Mr Moldt inside.

According to The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System, Moldt had gone to the Adult Night Club on the evening of November 7, 1997, and left around 11 p.m.

A listing about the case reads: "Amazingly, the vehicle had been plainly visible on a Google Earth satellite image of the area since 2007, but apparently no one had noticed it until 2019, when a property surveyor saw the auto while looking at Google Earth".

"The vehicle's exterior was heavily calcified and was obviously in the water for a significant amount of time", Barbera said. One week later the remains were positively identified as belonging to Mr Moldt. The medical examiner's office then confirmed who the remains belonged to.

Mr Moldt's sunken auto was spotted by a previous resident of the area after "doing a Google search", police said.

"You can't determine what happened that many years ago, what transpired", police spokeswoman Therese Barbera said.

According to an update posted to The Charley Project, an online repository of missing-persons cases, Moldt's sunken vehicle had been plainly visible on Google Earth since 2007.

He had called his girlfriend from the club saying he would soon return to their Lantana home.

The housing complex surrounding the pond, the Grand Isles, was under construction when Moldt disappeared, according to the Charley Project and local news reports.
