GM recalls more than 3.4M pickups, SUVs to fix brake issues

The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is seen at the 2018 North American International Auto Show on Jan. 13 2018 in Detroit Michigan

The post GM Recall 2019: 3.4 Million Trucks and SUVs Recalled Over Brake Issues appeared first on InvestorPlace. Affected vehicles include cars made from 2014 to 2018, particularly the Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Silverado, Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Sierra, Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon. GM has been repairing affected vehicles since December 2018, and issued a recall in Canada in June.

In documents sent to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), GM said that the amount of vacuum created by the vacuum pump may decrease over time, thereby affecting braking in "rare circumstances". The NHTSA links nine crashes and two injuries to the issue.

GM says that as it ages, the pump in the power-assist brakes can put out less vacuum power than needed, increasing stopping distance and the risk of a crash.

GM said that owners of vehicles subject to the recall can take their trucks to a dealership, where the dealer will recalibrate the brake control module for free.

GM said the vacuum assist pump, which is lubricated with engine oil that flows into the pump through a filter screen, can in some cases lose effectiveness over time, as debris such as oil sludge can accumulate on the filter screen.

Even with the problem, the brakes "continue to function and exceed the requirements of the appropriate federal motor vehicle safety standard", GM spokesman Dan Flores said. Reuters reports that GM is also recalling 270,000 other vehicles in the us, including 177,000 2018 Chevrolet Malibu cars with 1.5L turbo engines because an engine error can disable the fuel injectors and 91,000 2019 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vehicles due to a seatbelt-unfastened warning-light issue.

General Motors has plans for a massive new recall campaign that involves some of its most popular vehicles.
