France snaps Team USA’s global win streak

The exodus of star basketball players burned the U.S. in the FIBA Basketball World Cup championships.

Team USA's hopes of winning a third consecutive FIBA gold medal - and sixth consecutive worldwide gold medal - are now over. The U.S. will clearly have to make some major tweaks to the roster before the Olympics get underway.

Evan Fournier and Rudy Gobert proved too much for the Americans to handle in their quarterfinal tilt on Wednesday, with the pair combining for 43 points to help France secure an 89-79 win and book a spot in the semifinals.

If there's any silver living to this year's FIBA World Cup for the United States, it's that it was able to qualify for next year's Olympic games in Japan before being eliminated from medal contention. Donovan Mitchell led all scorers with 29, but there wasn't enough offensive output from the rest of the squad to hang with France late in the game. With Gobert guarding the paint, this was a game where the USA needed their scorers to step up and carry them into the semis, yet ultimately only Mitchell was able to assume that responsibility.

Les Bleus will now square off against Argentina on Friday, while the USA, which can't finish higher than fifth place, faces Serbia in a classification game on Thursday.
