China urges United States to ensure North Korea talks resume

North Korea fires unidentified projectiles toward East Sea

North Korea fired a new round of short-range projectiles into its eastern seas that flew about 330km on Tuesday, South Korean officials said, only hours after it signalled a new willingness to resume stalled denuclearisation talks with the United States later this month.

"Bolton may not be loved by everyone but surely was a bulwark against a half-baked nuclear deal with North Korea, knowing very well about its negotiating tactics", said Kim Hong-kyun, a former South Korean nuclear envoy.

Joe Scarborough expressed shock and amazement that President Donald Trump's oval office comments from Wednesday in which he seemed to take sides with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un over his own, now-former, National Security Advisor John Bolton.

"What remains to be done is running fire test which is most vivid character in terms of the power of multiple rocket launcher", KCNA said.

It was the second known test of a super-large multiple rocket launcher that North Korea says is needed to cope with outside military threats.

President Donald Trump has played down this year's tests.

Policy analysts say Bolton's departure could help USA efforts to revive the talks but will not make Washington's aim of persuading Pyongyang to give up its nuclear weapons any easier.

The Tuesday test came shortly after a top North Korean diplomat, Choe Son Hui, issued a statement saying the country would be willing to hold talks "at the time and place to be agreed late in September".

Trump's efforts to engage with North Korea almost fell apart altogether in February after he followed Bolton's advice at the second summit in Hanoi and handed Kim a piece of paper that called for the transfer of Pyongyang's nuclear weapons and bomb fuel to the United States.

Choe said she hopes the United States will bring "a proposal geared to the interests of the DPRK and the USA and based on decision methods acceptable to us".

China urged the United States on Thursday to adopt an approach more conducive to dialogue in response to North Korea's goodwill in wanting to resume denuclearization talks. North Korea often ratchets up military tensions ahead of negotiations meant to end its nuclear ambitions.

Little progress has been made in getting Kim to give up his weapons programs, but Trump has repeatedly pointed to North Korea's freeze in nuclear and long-range missile tests since 2017 as evidence of the success of his efforts. The remarks, which follow a speech Friday by lead US negotiator Stephen Biegun, represented some of the regime's most positive remarks about talks since President Donald Trump's June 30 meeting with Kim.
