China says trade talks with U.S. to take place in October

Trump: U.S. does not want to discuss Huawei with China

Chinese Vice Premier Liu He is said to have held a phone call with U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin - where both parties agreed to hold what will be the thirteenth round of high-level economic talks in Washington early next month.

China announced that its trade officials will travel to Washington early next month for talks with US counterparts, potentially restarting stalled negotiations after weeks of uncertainty and escalation. China's central bank governor Yi Gang also attended the call.

The officials agreed to "work together and take practical actions to create favourable conditions for consultations", the ministry said in a statement.

U.S. and Chinese trade negotiators will resume talks in Washington in early October, Beijing said Thursday after new punitive tariffs raised fears of a breakdown in the protracted negotiations. A cautious statement from the USTR's office confirmed that ministerial-level discussions will take place in "the coming weeks", without specifying when.

The last round of talks in July in Shanghai ended with no indication of progress.

Washington began imposing 15% tariffs on an array of Chinese imports on Sunday, while China began placing new duties on U.S. crude oil.

Any meeting in the immediate future would take place against the threat of increasing US tariffs on Chinese goods, as President Donald Trump's administration is set to ratchet up levies on October 1 and in December.

Some analysts suggest Beijing is holding out in hopes Trump will feel pressure to make a more favorable deal as his campaign for the 2020 presidential election picks up.
