Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is vulnerable in next month's election

CANADA: NDP denies reports of N.B defections

Andrew Scheer, trying to defeat Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, insisted he had no plans to reopen the abortion debate if he won the election.

On Wednesday, Trudeau visited Rideau Hall in Ottawa, where he asked Governor General Julie Payette to dissolve government, thereby officially starting the 41-day election campaign.

Mr Trudeau is seeking a second term in office after winning a majority government in the 2015 Canadian general election.

Who are Mr Trudeau's competitors?

"We've done a lot this past four years, but the truth is we're just getting started."

Trudeau says this is a chance for Canadians to have a say on the future of the country, "We get to make an important choice about the future of our country".

Since Andrew Scheer has raised questions about Justin Trudeau's trustworthiness, do you trust the Conservative leader?

The worst moment of Mr Trudeau's tenure came in February, when former justice minister Jody Wilson-Raybould accused the prime minister and top officials of inappropriately pressuring her to ensure that construction firm SNC-Lavalin Group Inc avoid a trial on corruption charges.

"No one running for national office here", said Jeremy Kinsman, a veteran Canadian diplomat who was part of Trudeau's early foreign affairs council, "would dare support [Trump's] style, apparent values, or the substance of his actions, and expect to win".

Two other parties, the social democratic New Democrats (with strength in British Columbia and Alberta and parts of Ontario) and the environmental Greens (with potential in progressive urban areas), will mount spirited, and perhaps consequential, campaigns that will siphon votes from the two major parties.

The party, which led the pack at the start of the 2015 campaign but ended up coming in third place, is dipping in the polls and struggling to raise money this year.

Mr Trudeau wasn't the only leader whose campaign faced transportation problems on the first day.

He was elected as leader of Canada's Conservative Party in 2017 and the party generally supports a strong federal system of government. That margin would not be enough to guarantee a majority of seats in the House of Commons.

The campaign is expected to focus on issues of affordability, the economy and climate issues.
