Canada's Grand Slam champ Andreescu credits winning mindset to meditation

Serena Williams and Bianca Andreescu

Andreescu shot out of the blocks before surviving some late nerves to win 6-3 7-5 as Williams hopes of a record-tying 24th grand slam slipped away in front of close friend Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, who watched from her player box.

It beats out last year's 16-year gap when Williams lost to 20-year-old Naomi Osaka in last year's dramatic and controversial US Open final.

She has failed to even win a set in those four matches and remains one behind Australian Margaret Court's record for most Grand Slam trophies. She embraced an emotional Andreescu at the net after the match and was nothing short of graceful during the trophy ceremony.

She couldn't even get into main draw of the U.S. Open previous year after losing in qualifying.

But her success has done more to grow the sport in this country than maybe even she has realized.

Williams was broken three times in six matches before the final.

Reporter: "Last year you were excusing more yourself than today or not?" "I have to do better, '" Williams said. "Excusing more myself? Anyway, thank you". If she's still motivated and wanting to do it, I think she will carry on.

"Bianca played an unbelievable match, I am so proud and happy for you".

However, Andreescu stemmed the tide with a hold and then pounced on another poor Williams service game of which there were too many, an unreturnable forehand victor clinching the Canadian's first grand slam title on her maiden main draw appearance at the U.S. Open. In a matchup between tennis' Canadian teenage newcomer and one of the greatest superstars in the history of tennis, the youngster took home the crown. "She came up to me in the locker room, she said some really nice things, which I'll cherish for a really, really long time", Andreescu said about the 37-year-old Williams. "It's definitely frustrating, you know", Williams said.

She attacked from the beginning Saturday, breaking Williams twice in the first set - in the first game and on a double fault to end the set - while facing just one break point.

Williams's first serve deserted her, with just a wretched 44 per cent of them hitting the spot.

Williams will turn 38 later this month, while Andreescu turned 19 in June. Then, her face in disbelief, 19-year-old Andreescu hugged Williams at the net and fell to the blue court, basking in her feat.

Andreescu said she had to fight off the crowd noise at times, especially when she saw her 5-1 lead evaporate in the second set. "I had some doubts because I've witnessed her come back from being 5-0 down, 5-1 down, 5-2 down". A first-time Grand Slam champion. When asked what she had to overcome to get over the finish line in the post-match, on-court interview, Andreescu responded: "The crowd". I'm just trying to win Grand Slams. "I just want to keep improving it", Andreescu said. Did I win that first point? She started the year with career winnings of just $215,888.
