Cameroonian and African football icon Samuel Eto'o retires

Former Barcelona and Inter star Samuel Eto'o has seemingly called time on his illustrious career in a message via social media.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that after a trophy-laden 22-year playing career, Eto'o has chose to hang up his boots.

The striker took to Instagram and posted, "The end, towards a new challenge".

The Cameroon star is also one of Africa's most decorated player, having won 15 titles during his club career, which includes three UEFA Champions League titles.

In 2015, a move to Turkey beckoned as he spent three more goal-filled years with Antalyaspor, notching 44 in 76 league games before a move to Konyaspor and eventually Qatar SC. "Thank you all, big love", he penned.

His move to Mallorca in 2000 ignited a fine career in La Liga, and Barcelona signed him for €24 million in 2004. Eto'o made a total of 133 appearances for Mallorca and become their all-time leading domestic league scorer with 54 goals.

Four years later, he moved to Barcelona, where he was part of one of the best attacks in the world alongside Ronaldinho, as the Catalans won back-to-back La Liga titles as well as the Champions League in 2006, where Eto'o scored the equaliser in a 2-1 final win over Arsenal in Paris.

Three years in Russian Federation with Anzhi Makhachkala were followed by two in the Premier League with Chelsea and Everton, before a brief return to Italy with Sampdoria.

Eto'o managed to win various trophies for both Barcelona and Cameroon during his playing days. He helped his nation win two African Cup of Nations trophies, as well as an Olympic gold medal in 2000.

At the last count, Eto'o was voted African player of the year four times, an honour he shares with Ivorian midfielder Yaya Toure.
