Blast heard near U.S. Embassy in Kabul on 9/11 anniversary

President Donald Trump appears at a campaign rally Monday in Fayetteville North Carolina

Many in Washington had been shocked and a few had been offended that the Taliban had been about to go to the presidential retreat on the eve of the anniversary of the September 11 terrorist assaults.

A US Embassy official has confirmed the blast to PBS, but had no further details.

Kabulov's remarks came a day after U.S. President Donald Trump said that peace talks with the Taliban are "dead" after cancelling a planned meeting outside of the nation's capital, in retaliation for recent Taliban attack in Kabul, which killed a dozen people, including a U.S. service member. The NATO mission, which is nearby, also said no personnel had been injured.

The insurgents' determination to step up both attacks on provincial centers and suicide bombings even as peace talks were taking place was a major factor in pushing U.S. President Donald Trump to announce on Saturday that he was canceling here the talks aimed at ending America's longest war of 18 years.

The peace negotiations - which were in their final stages, only requiring a final sign-off from both parties - were meant to smooth the United States withdrawal from Afghanistan and ensure the Taliban did not use the country as a terrorist "safe haven".

"I'm all for some kind of negotiated peace to bring our guys and gals back home, but it has to be the correct type of peace where the Taliban and al-Qaida are told point-blank ... any violation at all will be dealt with swiftly and with a lot of strength", said Ielpi, a National Sept. 11 Memorial & Museum board member.

'We had two methods to finish occupation in Afghanistan, one was jihad and combating, the opposite was talks and negotiations, ' Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid stated. He said he changed his mind after a Taliban vehicle bombing in Kabul on Thursday killed 12 people, including a USA service member.

"If Trump wants to stop talks, we will take the first way and they will soon regret it", he added. A US -led invasion of Afghanistan shortly after the 2001 attack toppled the Taliban, who had harbored Osama bin Laden, the al-Qaida leader and attacks mastermind.

In the almost 18 years of fighting since then, the number of USA troops in Afghanistan soared to 100,000 and dropped dramatically after bin Laden was killed in neighboring Pakistan in 2011.

Alarm was sounded by USA embassy after the explosion and can be heard in surrounding areas.

About 14,000 USA troops remain in Afghanistan to train local forces.

On Sunday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that "we've killed over a thousand Taliban in just the last 10 days". The Afghan government had been excluded in the talks and Khalilzad showed President Ghani the draft agreement only when it had been finalised.
