Apple, Foxconn infringe China Labor Law at iPhone plant in Zhengzhou

The firm has responded to an investigation by a campaign group ahead of the launch of its latest iPhone

Apple and its partner, Foxconn, is now under scrutiny due to their practices in making the latest iPhone 11.

The Chinese Labor Watch group signaled that Foxconn's factories are breaking Chinese law.

At the same time, Apple reportedly took issue with some of the findings, such as those pertaining to overtime hours and related compensation.

The work rights bunch China Labor Watch (CLW) distributed a report on Sunday (Sept. 8) enumerating work infringement at a Foxconn processing plant in Zhengzhou that makes items for the Apple organization. The report also says that Foxconn performed its own operational review and came to similar findings. However, this practice is highly illegal.

Apple acknowledged that it did find a number of student interns working overnight at a supplier facility, which is not allowed. The company sent an investigator to the factory and met with Foxconn officials to discuss the heavy use of dispatch staff. Student workers have been forced to work overtime hours, completing internships at the factory that are unrelated to their degree. According to the report, workers at Zhengzhou Foxocnn put in at least 100 overtime hours a month during peak production seasons.

However, when contacted by Sixth Tone, a Foxconn spokesman declined to disclose the percentage of dispatch workers at the Zhengzhou campus relative to the total, or when the company had found the evidence that it was employing too many such workers. "There have been periods where workers had one rest day for every 13 days worked or even had only one rest day for a month".

Pricing is yet to be confirmed for the platform, which could be discussed alongside more details on another subscription service in the pipeline, the gaming-based Apple Arcade.

Apple has responded to a report by a campaign group which criticised working conditions at a factory where iPhones are made. Apple said it's working closely with Foxconn to resolve the matter, but any sudden changes to the work schedule could affect this year's iPhones launch. Foxconn, officially referred to as Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., hires tens of thousands of momentary workers to ramp up manufacturing and meet iPhone demand throughout the key holiday season annually.

Workers sometimes have to stay at the factory for unpaid meetings at night. The factory does not provide adequate protective equipment for staff; while work injuries are not reported by the factory, and verbal abuse is common there. "We have confirmed all workers are being compensated appropriately, including any overtime wages and bonuses, all overtime work was voluntary and there was no evidence of forced labor".

"We looked into the claims by China Labor Watch and most of the allegations are false", Apple said. One investigator worked in the plant for four years and found other lapses as well including harsh working conditions.
