Zelensky, Trudeau discuss Russian Federation over phone

Ahead of G7 summit Macron presses U.S. to help reform taxes on big tech

"Since the issue of Ukraine is on the agenda of the G7 summit in the French city of Biarritz, we worked at all levels in key capitals of the world, informing partners about the lack of any progress in Russia's position regarding the end of aggression against Ukraine", Zelenko noted.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has opposed the idea of Russia's return to the G8.

Russian Federation was pushed out of the G8 in 2014 because of its annexation of Crimea from Ukraine. "The indispensable precondition is that a solution is found concerning Ukraine".

Making matters more hard, France may not be able to rely on its European partners this year, with Britain focused on Brexit, Italy's coalition government collapsing this week and key German ally, Chancellor Angela Merkel, weakened at home by dissensions in her governing coalition.

The G7 now brings together Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United States.

Tensions between the USA and Iran, the conflict in Syria and the situation in Ukraine will be at the heart of the discussions, Macron said while meeting Putin in southern France on Monday. A ceasefire deal brokered by France and Germany ended major conflict in eastern Ukraine in 2015, though small-scale clashes still occur regularly.

The Russian Federation was expelled from the old G8 format after it had annexed the Ukrainian Crimea in 2014 and all other members of the group - the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the U.S. - imposed sanctions against Moscow.

Moscow voiced support for returning to the group, but added China and India should also be allowed to join.

The Normandy Four talks on Ukraine has existed since June 2014, when the leaders of Russia, Ukraine, France and Germany, who gathered in Normandy for the celebrations of the 70th anniversary of D-Day (the landing of allied troops in 1944) discussed the settlement of the conflict in southeastern Ukraine for the first time.

"I could certainly" support that, he told reporters.

Speaking alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday, Macron repeated that position, but insisted that there was a window of opportunity to make progress on the crisis after new President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on August 6 pressed Putin for a resumption of peace talks.

"I think Russia's return would make sense only if it's possible to avoid the "seven against one" trap", Russian lawmaker Konstantin Kosachev said.
