Woman stabbed, knife-wielding man restrained by public in Sydney

Man With Knife Arrested In Sydney CBD Amid Reports Of Multiple People Injured

That's when a bystander, armed only with a wooden chair, jumped into action.

Video showed that people had pinned the man to the pavement on his back with a plastic milk crate over his head and two chairs over his body.

Gavin Wood, a superintendent with the New South Wales police, praised members of the public who restrained the suspect, who has not been named. They approach the person. with clear evidence of a stabbing previously.

But he did not appear to be acting for any terrorist groups and the attack was not being treated as terrorism, police added.

Fuller said the assailant had a "history of mental health".

Police say the suspect, who witnesses say yelled "Allahu akbar" - or "God is great" - during the incident, has been arrested and is being questioned. "It is not now classed as a terrorist incident ..."

A NSW Fire and Rescue spokesman confirmed a crew was in the area and assisted police.

Police have released a statement, saying: "Police and NSW Ambulance paramedics located a woman inside a hotel, who had a stab wound". They're working to determine if that death is related to the stabbing spree.

One witness addresses him, shouting: "Do you know how many people you just stabbed, you dog?"

"Me, Paul and Luke, we've adopted Australia as our new home and you hear about this happening all over, especially the United Kingdom, and you think coming to Australia you're really safe and you feel like you've kind of got away from it".

O'Shaughnessy told reporters that together with other onlookers, they managed to subdue the alleged offender.
