The 19-year-old, who defeated two top-10 players en route to the final, will break into the world's top 20 for the first time in her career on Monday.
"It's a little frustrating for me because I know that I can play, I just can't play today", she said.
I know it's so easy to say, but it hasn't come easy.
"I obviously expected this".
Williams explained in her post-match press conference she had been struggling with back spasms towards the end of her semi-final match against the Czech, Bouzkova.
"But you're truly a champion, I've watched you play so many times". But only four games into the first set, she was suffering from back spasms and had to see trainers on the court before eventually having to retire from the match, making Andreescu the champion. "I'm speechless. I'm the first Canadian to win here since 1969".
"I'm not a crier, but, thank you guys", said Williams as she choked back tears after accepting the second-place check.
Serena Williams had a rough weekend on the tennis court-but in true Serena fashion, she's not letting it keep her down for long. I'm sorry I couldn't do it today, I tried. "I tried but I just couldn't do it", an emotional Williams was quoted as saying by wwos.
Williams' retirement was the last of several high-profile injuries at this year's Rogers Cup.

Milos Raonic said the final 30 minutes of his second-round match against countryman Felix Auger-Aliassime were likely "the least enjoyable" he's ever spent on a tennis court.
Auger-Aliassime, who turned 19 years old Thursday, fell 7-6 (7), 5-7, 3-6 to No. 6 seed Karen Khachanov in just his third matchup with a top-10 player in his young career.
The win moved Andreescu to 14th in the rankings.
Bianca Andreescu made history on August 11, 2019 when she became the first Canadian to win the Rogers Cup in 50 years.
"The most frustrating part is that I've had these very bad spasms a lot in my career, actually", she said.
Andreescu also rehabbed a shoulder injury earlier this season, and said on Monday that she chose to skip this week's Western & Southern Open in Mason, Ohio in order to allow her body to recover before the U.S. Open.
"All I can say is wow", Andreescu said. And how I can become better as a person if I push myself through these tough moments.
'I'm trying to look at my injury not as a setback but more of a challenge.
