Walmart's Flipkart to add free movies, videos streaming to its app

Flipkart Confirms Plans to Launch Free Streaming Service ‘Flipkart Videos’

Devangshu Dutta, chief executive of retail consultancy Third Eyesight, says the content market is still evolving - if one looks at the number of customers paying partly or fully for services from Netflix, Amazon and Hotstar.

Indian e-commerce giant Flipkart is planning to enter a world of video streaming with new some awesome features for its users. With this, Flipkart will be able to compete with its rival Amazon in the OTT division as well. Flipkart, situated in the southern city of Bengaluru, said it would offer films, short recordings and Web series on its application, however included it won't wander into unique substance at the present time. The service is now in beta mode, the people said, asking not to be identified discussing internal strategy. As per a report by Bloomberg, Flipkart will launch free video streaming before Diwali, for its premium subscribers - those who're signed up Flipkart Plus. Flipkart said it has been working to customize its entire platform for several months to add support for Hindi. The report further added that Flipkart is betting big on Bollywood, and it will serve entertainment to Plus users free of cost. Unlike Amazon's service, however, Flipkart won't be producing original content, but instead, will license programs from the likes of Walt Disney and Balaji Telefilms.

According to a report by Moneycontrol, video is the only thing that Flipkart has not tried its expertise on. The rejig, which includes a regional language interface, video streaming, and feeds to make itself more social, indicates a strategy shift to expand to a larger local and social engagement-led platform from a pure ecommerce destination. The ideas would help to roll out the needs of the next 200 million users in India.

Bringing content from over 30 brands and 400 influencers associated with Flipkart, in various videos, GIFs, images, stories, quizzes and polls formats, under one umbrella will give the power of online shopping in the customer's hand.

Also, Flipkart's entry comes at a time when Netflix has announced its cheapest plan, which is restricted to single device usage. Unfortunately for Flipkart, the talks did not reach an advanced stage and eventually fell through.

On the other hand, Amazon's Prime service now costs under Rs 999 per year or 129 per month.
