Walmart Reportedly Removing Violent Game Ads, Will Still Sell Guns

The Walmart in Clay is seen in a file

The company previously announced they stopped selling assault-style rifles in their stores, as well as raising the legal age to purchase a firearm from 18 to 21, but said they have no intention to stop selling guns entirely.

"We've taken this action out of respect for the incidents of the past week, and it does not reflect a long-term change in our video game assortment", Tara House, a Walmart spokeswoman, said in a statement sent to ABC News.

While Walmart was criticized for pulling the ads, this wasn't its only response to the deadly shooting in El Paso. Also last week, two Walmart workers in Southaven, Miss., were shot and killed July 30 at the company's store there by a gunman whom authorities said was a disgruntled ex-employee. But the company plans to still sell the controversial video games - and guns.

Original: Earlier today, we reported that Walmart was removing signage and demos that highlighted violent video games from its stores. Despite the pleas from many to stop using games as a scapegoat for violent behavior, and with no scientific or psychological evidence connecting the two, Walmart seems to be latching onto the narrative that video games are at the root of mass gun violence in America. "Yet Japan seldom has more than 10 shooting deaths a year in a population of 127 million people", wrote Shannon Watts, the founder of Moms Demand Action, in a tweet. The company has always been one of the largest gun resellers in America, and, at first, it seemed like Walmart would stand idly by and not take any action.

In her call for Walmart to stop gun sales, Warren cited CVS's 2014 decision to pull tobacco products off its shelves. Almost every story about this memo focuses on the fact that Walmart is still selling guns, despite pressure and campaigns to try to convince the company to stop. President Trump afterwards would partially blame the wave of mass shootings, including one this past weekend at a bar in Dayton, Ohio, on "gruesome and grisly video games that are now commonplace".

Check all signing throughout the store and remove any referencing combat or third-person shooter video games.

"No profit is worth those lives", she added.

'There's been no change to our policy regarding firearms, ' said spokesman Randy Hargrove at the time.

"Remove from the salesfloor or turn off these items immediately", reads the letter.

Employees also were asked to shut off hunting season videos in the sporting goods department where guns are sold. A spokesperson says there's been no change in policy after recent mass shootings.
