Tlaib won't visit West Bank under 'oppressive' Israeli conditions

Suspected ramming attack near Elazar

Deri tweeted about the encounter, saying he approved Tlaib's request to visit Israel as a "gesture of goodwill on a humanitarian basis".

"Apparently her hate for Israel overcomes her love for her grandmother", Deri wrote. Ilhan Omar due to their support for the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions, or BDS, movement, a global nonviolent effort to pressure Israel over its actions against the Palestinians.

Tlaib pleaded her case to Israel's interior minister, Aryeh Deri, asking for permission to visit her 90-year-old grandmother in the West Bank. I will respect any restriction and will not promote boycotts against Israel during my visit.

"I should be on a plane to see her", the Democratic Congresswoman from Detroit said.

Deri then approved the request on early August 16, in a move backed up by the security minister, according to a statement obtained by the Jerusalem Post.

I would like to request admittance to Israel in order to visit my relatives, and specifically my grandmother, who is in her 90s and lives in Beit Ur al-Fouqa. The Israeli official called the decision "a provocation to embarrass Israel". In May Tlaib said she finds "a kind of calming feeling" in knowing that Palestinians were involved in creating "a safe haven for Jews" following the Holocaust. "I have decided that visiting my grandmother under these oppressive conditions stands against everything I believe in -fighting against racism, oppression & injustice", she said.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, under public pressure from Republican President Trump, on Thursday said he would not allow the pair to make their trip.

Netanyahu's government on Thursday barred Tlaib and Omar, the first two Muslim women elected to Congress and both outspoken supporters of Palestinian rights and critics of the influence of the pro-Israel lobby on Capitol Hill.

Tlaib followed up with a press release accusing the Israeli government of using her "love and desire to see [her] grandmother" as a tool to silence her, which she further compared to the "racist treatment that many Palestinian Americans endure" from Israel.

Trump had made a post on Twitter on August 15 expressing support for Israel, saying that the country "would show great weakness" if it allowed the two congresswomen to visit. "Minnesota and MI will have a hard time putting them back in office".

"They are a disgrace", the president stated.

Trump has been attacking Tlaib and Omar, along with lawmakers Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of NY and Ayanna Pressley of MA - all women of color known as the Squad - for weeks, accusing them of hostility to Israel in a barrage condemned by critics as racist.

While most of President Trump's "Maga" agenda is built on false nostalgia for a "great America" that never really existed, his tweets Thursday certainly did evoke a longing for the past - think of that moment when Bill Clinton, Yitzhak Rabin and Yasser Arafat met on the White House Lawn in a flash of possibility for cross-cultural dialogue. "This statement is a big deal", she wrote, alongside a clip of Sanders' interview.

"Think about what's going on in our country right now", Rouda exclaimed.
