Tesla Model 3 hits parked truck and catches fire

Watch Self-Driving Tesla Car Catch Fire and Explode After Collision in Moscow

According to reports, two small explosions happened shortly after the crash and the metal frame of the vehicle was the only remaining parts of the auto after the fire.

Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) has stood by safety claims for its Model 3 in the face of regulatory scrutiny, while documents showed the top USA automotive safety watchdog issued at least five subpoenas since past year seeking information about crashes involving the company's vehicles.

In the wake of each incident, Tesla has taken the opportunity to remind the public that a driver's hands should always remain on the steering wheel while Autopilot is activated.

A recent study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) showed that many drivers may still be carrying around the notion that the feature equips the auto with self-driving or autonomous capabilities.

The eyewitness is filming the other side of the ring road as they pass the crashed Tesla when the vehicle explodes, engulfing the auto in flames and thick black smoke.

Russia's RIA state news agency website posted a video showing the auto driving in the left-hand lane of Moscow's ring road, known as the MKAD, before crashing into a tow truck parked by a safety fence that separates the carriageway from oncoming traffic.

All three escaped the vehicle before the blast. The driver suffered a broken leg in the collision while the children were left with bruises, the news channel reported.

Reuters reported that a Tesla owner filed a lawsuit against the electric vehicle maker on the ground that the company restricted the range of batteries of older vehicles through the software update to avoid recall to resolve what the plaintiff claim are defective batteries. Following the crash, the Model S caught fire and then exploded while in slow-moving evening traffic.

"Tesla vehicle fires are exceptionally rare events, and in some cases, there have been zero Tesla vehicle fires in a quarter", the automaker said in the report.

In response to the release of the documents, Tesla defended the Model 3 safety claims, arguing that they were based on the NHTSA's data.

Tesla did not respond to FOX Business' request for comment at the time of publication.
