Singapore Airlines joins ban on MacBooks

Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin ban MacBooks from checked luggage

Singapore Airlines Ltd. and Thai Airways International PCL have already stopped passengers from taking any of the affected models on their aircraft.

A number of global airlines have also prohibited the devices from being carried on-board the aircraft or in checked-in luggage including Singapore Airlines and Thai Airways. The good thing is, Virgin will still allow passengers to carry MacBooks in their hand baggage.

Whilst the company does not give any reason for banning the entire notebook lineup, it is likely to make it easier for the staff to manage, without having to check particular models.

Qantas announced (via Bloomberg) that all 15-inch versions of the MacBook Pro can no longer be in checked luggage for fear the batteries could catch fire.

While the safety measure only affects about 460,000 units sold in the USA and Canada, checking which models are affected - or if they have been serviced properly to avoid the ban - apparently is a very hard and time-consuming task for airline personnel.

The tech giant added that it would replace the batteries free of charge, the report said.

In the United States, agents are now checking whether a MacBook Pro has USB-C ports to determine whether it can fly - those between 2012 and 2015 should be carried instead of checked. Copy the serial number.

Qantas Airways has issued similar rules, telling ZDNet that, "until further notice, all 15-inch Apple MacBook Pros must be carried in cabin baggage and switched off for flight following a recall notice issued by Apple".

This is because Apple announced that some models may overheat and cause a fire.

Now India is also seeing if it should ask its airlines to bar the affected MacBook Pro models. However, Apple is still keeping details about the device close to its chest, so it's hard to tell what to expect from the new iteration.
