Sharp providing flagship IGZO display panels to Nintendo’s new Switch

Switchlite

The confirmation came directly from Katsuaki Nomura, execute VP of the Japanese company.

Nomura didn't say which Switch models will sport IGZO displays, and Nintendo didn't have anything to say to The Wall Street Journal about its report.

By opting to use Sharp's screens in the Switch, Nintendo could take advantage of the smaller transistors used in IGZO displays to increase the system's overall power efficiency. This new console is a more affordable version of the original Nintendo Switch that was released on March 2017.

Pillars of Eternity: Complete Edition is quite possibly one of the most definitive RPG experiences that Nintendo Switch players can enjoy.

The report adds, "The Kyoto-based videogame maker plans to refresh its Switch lineup with two new models-one with longer battery life set to go on sale in August and a cheaper one for hand-held use going on sale in September".

Though IGZO displays boast support for high resolutions, that probably isn't a major selling point for Nintendo, as the Switch's handheld resolution is only 720p.

According to the Wall Street Journal, a top executive at Sharp said Nintendo would use the company's panels in its new devices, but didn't specify whether both new models would get the panels. Nintendo didn't comment, but it's hard to imagine the Switch not outlasting the ill-fated Wii U.

Sharp and Nintendo have a long history of working together as the former designed auto stereoscopic display for the latter's 3DS console.

Nintendo has already stated that it will exclusively release one console, the Switch Lite, ahead of the holidays.
