Right-wing rally, counterprotests face off in Portland

Multiple groups including Rose City Antifa the Proud Boys and conservative activist Haley Adams were protesting in downtown Portland on Saturday

Right-wing groups and counterprotesters have gathered in downtown Portland in the U.S. state of OR, where authorities have set up concrete barriers and closed streets over fears of violence.

In addition to the Proud Boys, the white nationalist American Guard and the Three Percenters, a far-right militia, have said they will march.

Polices said they had seized weapons such as metal and wooden poles, bear spray and shields from multiple groups.

President Donald Trump on Saturday called for Antifa to be a designated an "organization of domestic terror", as the left-wing anti-fascist demonstrators were expected to show up in Portland, Oregon, to counterprotest a gathering of far-right and extremist groups.

He made the comment on Twitter Saturday, adding he's watching Portland "very closely" ahead of dueling demonstrations between Antifa and the Proud Boys.

Trump initially tweeted July 27 that he was considering naming antifa groups a terrorist organization. The down point of the scuffles was Antifa (from Anti-Fascist) attacking journalist Andy Ngo, who was beaten up, doused with milkshakes -which reportedly contained quick-drying cement- and deprived of his equipment.

On a Facebook page encouraging people to demonstrate, the group says they believe the city is a target "for right-wing attacks precisely because it is a symbol of progressive values".

CBS News is reporting from the neutral territory in the park.

Members of antifa often cover their faces with masks, making it harder to identify them.

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler appeared on Fox's Outnumbered: Overtime on Friday, telling host Harris Faulkner that he is "confident that from a law enforcement perspective, we're going to have all the tools and the resources and personnel we need".

Al Jazeera's Rob Reynolds reporting from Portland said that authorities plan to "smother" the rally with many police officers to keep the two sides apart and hopefully avoid any violence.

Mr Trump has previously mentioned white supremacists as well as antifa as being a major issue.

In the run-up to the event, leaders from the far-right have urged their followers to turn out in large numbers to protest the arrests of six members of right-wing groups on charges related to violence at previous rallies.

Patriot Prayer's Joey Gibson, who is not involved in this weekend's event but organized similar rallies in 2017 and 2018 that erupted in clashes, surrendered Friday on an arrest warrant for felony rioting.

According to the Oregonian, Cider Riot had been hosting a May Day celebration where several participants from an earlier demonstration had gathered when approximately 20 right-wing protesters, including Gibson, arrived at the business and started a brawl with the Cider Riot patrons.

A video of that attack went viral and allegedly led the Proud Boys to organise Saturday's event.

"What I'm saying to everybody who's listening to this (is) they're trying to shut you guys up".

"We support people's rights to demonstrate", Wheeler said. The SPLC, which monitors extremist activity across the United States, says the groups are a mix of white supremacists, neo-Nazis and anti-government militias.

The city has become the scene of violent protests in recent years.
