World Cup victor Hugo Lloris and Barcelona's Marc Andre Ter Stegen are also in the running for the coveted goalkeeping accolade.

Keeper Alisson, defenders Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, captain and midfielder Jordan Henderson and forward Sadio Mane are those up for the awards.

Unfortunately for Messi and Barca, they were unable to finish the job in the second leg at Anfield, as Liverpool sealed a remarkable turnaround by winning 4-0 in front of their own fans to reach the final.

The goal beat contenders from the likes of long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo to be voted the best of the 2018/19 season on the UEFA website. Two of the three players selected in the list are Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
