N. Korea fires more projectiles, rules out talks with South

It was the sixth round of launches in recent weeks in protest at ongoing joint military drills between Seoul and the US.

South Korea's trade row with Japan came amid worsening bilateral relations with North Korea, which has been ignoring Seoul's calls for dialogues and tested a slew of new short-range weapons in recent weeks that potentially expands its abilities targets throughout the South, including US military bases there. Experts say the new rockets appear to be more accurate and potentially harder for adversaries to hit. -South Korea military drills, the statement said.

Korea divided into two countries at the end of World War Two.

A statement released by Seoul said, "The intelligence authorities of South Korea and the United States are in the process of analysis and the South Korean military is closely monitoring military movements and maintaining a strong readiness stance".

South Korean Joint Chief Staff said North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles from a site near Tongchon city.

South Korea's presidential office said national security adviser Chung Eui-yong presided over an emergency National Security Council meeting and Moon was briefed on the launches.

The United States and South Korea kicked off their largely computer-simulated Dong Maeng - or "alliance" - exercises this week as an alternative to previous large-scale annual drills that were halted to expedite denuclearisation talks.

A USA official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said initial information indicated at least one projectile was sacked by North Korea and appeared to be similar to the short-range missiles fired in previous weeks.

The unidentified spokesman repeated criticism that the joint U.S.

Trump has said on Twitter that he received a letter from Kim stating that the North Korean leader is willing to meet again after joint U.S.

"I think the missile tests are created to pressure Trump to make a better offer", said Robert Kelly, a professor of worldwide relations at Pusan National University in South Korea.

Pyongyang called South Korea's president "impudent" and added that inter-Korean talks were over.

Kelly said Trump wants a deal he can sell to Fox News and his voters as a foreign policy triumph, even if it damages USA alliances in Asia, but he is surrounded by people such as Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and national security adviser John Bolton who take harder-line positions. But little progress has been made to improve talks between them and strengthen co-operation.

An official at Seoul's defense ministry said the latest test involved ballistic technology and detailed analysis was under way with the United States with the possibility that the North fired the same type of missiles it used on August 10.

Moon and Kim have met three times since April past year, pledging peace and cooperation, but little progress has been made to improve dialogue and strengthen exchanges and cooperation.

"We will advance dialogue and cooperation so that seeds sown together with North Korea in the spring of peace will grow into trees of prosperity", Moon said on Thursday, gliding over the continued sanctions on North Korea and the absence of steps by the regime to dismantle its nuclear program.

"Now is the time for both Koreas and the United States to focus on resuming working-level negotiations between Pyongyang and Washington at the earliest possible date".

But Pyongyang's message was clear: Moon has no right to talk about peace while conducting military exercises.
