Major power cut hits London and parts of England

UK power cuts

Energy regulators on Saturday demanded an urgent report from the operator of Britain's electricity grid into what caused a power cut that led to chaos across the country, with trains brought to a standstill and traffic lights knocked out.

"Train services running to and from these stations may be cancelled or delayed by up to 60 minutes".

A power cut disrupted train travel and snarled rush-hour traffic across large chunks of Britain, including London, on Friday afternoon.

In Cheshire, northwest England, police tweeted that they were aware of a power outage in the Ellesmere Port area.

Investigations are underway into the cause of a major power cut that left almost one million people in England and Wales without electricity.

The power cuts across the United Kingdom caused pandemonium as commuters attempted to get home for the weekend.

"There were some issues with regard to our outpatient areas and the generator that provides cover (to them)", said a spokeswoman for East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust.

"This has prevented our trains between Farringdon and Bedford from being able to take power and as a result, most of our trains are now at a stand".

He added: "This will require careful study to make sure that we do learn any lessons that come out of it and that the next time this happens disruption is minimised and hopefully a lot less than it was last night".

The 26-year-old told PA: "I realised that nothing was open and there was hardly any phone signal".

"All trains were stopped while our back-up signalling system started up".

The power cut meant traffic lights were out of action across the UK.

The power cut was caused after two power stations disconnected from the grid "near simultaneously", the National Grid said, but ruled out any kind of malicious intent or cyber attack.

Newcastle Airport was also plunged into darkness during the major power cut. About 300,000 people were affected in London and the southeastern part of the country, while 500,000 people were affected by the Western Power Distribution Network.

It later said: "90 percent of customers are now restored and we are working hard to restore the remaining customers as soon as possible".
