Iran Navy Chief: Zionist presence in Persian Gulf may trigger war

Iran threatened war if Israeli warships enter the Persian Gulf as part of the U.S. maritime coalition

Iraq has rejected as "unacceptable" any Israeli participation in a naval force sought by the U.S. in Strait of Hormuz.

Iraq's foreign minister on Monday rejected worldwide assistance - particularly from Israel - in securing the Persian Gulf, saying Arab states were capable of ensuring the safe passage of vessels without foreign help.

Katz said Israel's participation would help to contain the Iranian threat as well as boost ties in the Gulf region.

Iraq's foreign minister says Iraq and Gulf Arab states do not need foreign powers to secure navigation in the Persian Gulf as that would only increase regional tensions.

Commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy, Rear Admiral Alireza Tangsiri, has called on the United States and the United Kingdom to take responsibility for an Israeli presence in the Persian Gulf, warning that it may trigger a war in the region.

He added that Iraq was "seeking to reduce tensions in the region through negotiations, while the presence of Western forces in the region is increasing them".

Katz said that partnering with the USA was in Israel's strategic interests of countering Ira and boosting ties with Gulf countries.

Israeli foreign minister Israel Katz said on August 7 that the regime would be part of the US-led coalition to "protect the security of the Persian Gulf".

Shortly after the Israeli regime announced it would join the USA coalition last week, Iran warned the Israeli regime over the consequences of such decision.

Tensions have escalated in past months, with drones downed and tankers mysteriously attacked in Gulf and nearby waters, where about 20 percent of the world's oil trade passes through.

Washington claims Tehran has played a role in two separate attacks on oil tankers in the Sea of Oman in May and June, without providing any credible evidence to support the accusations.
