Hong Kong Airport cancels flights as protests continue

The nosedive in stocks comes as the airline is caught up in pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong

Pointing to an estimated average daily rate of MOP$790 million through the first 11 days of August, Bernstein analysts Vitaly Umansky, Eunice Lee and Kelsey Zhu said, "We are beginning to see a negative impact from the protests in Hong Kong which is causing some transport disruption and beginning to create a headwind to China visitation into Hong Kong (and onward visitation into Macau)".

Lam said last month that the bill has failed but has refused to withdraw it completely, leading to accusations that she's simply stalling for another chance to ram it through.

Hong Kong's Airport Authority added that there were "calls online" for a public assembly in the airport on Tuesday afternoon.

A massive traffic jam soon formed on the highway leading back to Hong Kong's city center, but hundreds of protesters remained in the arrivals hall well into the night with no sign of leaving.

It was unclear how many flights were impacted, according to Doris Lai, a spokesperson for the Hong Kong Airport Authority.

The protest movement's demands include the resignation of the Chinese territory's leader, Carrie Lam, democratic elections for her successor, the release of those arrested in earlier protests and an investigation into police use of force. Tear gas was sacked at crowds in the districts of Hong Kong, Kowloon and the New Territories.

A train station in Kwai Fong filled with smoke after about a dozen police officers fired tear gas inside.

Later on Monday, two state media outlets ran videos showing armoured personnel and troop carriers purportedly driving to Shenzhen, which borders Hong Kong.

"The situation in Hong Kong in the past week has made me very anxious that we have reached this risky situation".

The airport was operating normally as of now, staff at the airport's customer service hotline said by phone.

"All those who care about Hong Kong's future should come out and stand against all criminal acts and perpetrators of violence", Yang told reporters.

A crowd of protesters that authorities said numbered more than 5,000 descended on the airport yesterday carrying placards and chanting slogans about police violence.

Australian travellers stuck in Hong Kong have described chaotic scenes at the airport.

Canada's prime minister also said he's deeply concerned about how the situation is unfolding in Hong Kong and called on China to "respectfully treat those Hong Kong citizens or the demonstrators who have reasonable concerns" toward the government bill.

He said the protesters' "violent crimes" must be dealt with "resolutely" and "without mercy".

The protests began in opposition to a bill that would have allowed extraditions to the mainland, but quickly evolved into a broader bid to reverse a slide of rights and freedoms in the southern Chinese city.

In 1997, Hong Kong was returned to China, under the assumption that there would be a "one country, two systems" operation in place - meaning there would be one country, China, but two distinct Chinese regions: China and Hong Kong.

"I feel that I have to do something".
