Friend of gunman in OH mass shooting faces federal gun charges: prosecutors

A friend of the OH man who killed nine people, including his own sister, in Dayton this month will be charged on Monday with lying on a form related to guns, federal prosecutors said on Monday. He was killed by police officers soon after he began firing.

The charge comes just over a week after the mass shooting in Dayton, Ohio, where Betts opened fire in a popular entertainment district, killing his sister and eight others.

The man in question, Ethan Kollie, 24, allegedly bought body armor, an AR-15 accessory and a 100 round drum magazine for the shooter in May, the Department of Justice said.

Kollie had a concealed carry permit and owned a micro Draco pistol, a Taurus semi-automatic and a.38 Taurus revolver, Glassman said. He also told the agents that he had smoked marijuana nearly daily over a period of 10 years.

Prosecutors are accusing Kollie of lying about not using marijuana on federal firearms forms in the purchase of a pistol that was not used in the shooting. Kollie bought the drum 6-8 weeks ago and that's when Betts then took possession of all three components.

Kollie said he kept the gun components and body armor he bought for Betts earlier this year because Betts wanted to hide them from his parents, according to Glassman.

A search warrant was executed at Kollie's home, turning up several weapons, marijuana, and mushrooms. "When asked how often he used drugs in the past year and a half, Kollie said he smokes marijuana every day and has done so since he was 14".

Kollie was charged with possessing a firearm as an unlawful user of a controlled substance and faces up to 10 years in prison. Making a false statement regarding firearms carries a potential maximum sentence of up to five years' imprisonment.

John Legend made a surprise visit to Dayton, Ohio, Sunday, a week after a shooting there left nine people dead and at least 31 others injured.
