Despite deadly shootings, Walmart won't stop gun sales

Walmart Doesn't Intend to Limit Gun, Ammo Sales After Shooting

A spokesperson for Walmart says the company will not change its policy on gun sales and open carry despite the mass shooting at one of its stores in El Paso on Saturday.

'We are focused on supporting our associates, our customers and the entire El Paso community, ' spokesman Randy Hargrove said.

Hargrove said Walmart requires customers looking to purchase firearms must pass a background check before a sale is completed.

Meanwhile, At least nine people were killed while 16 got injured on Sunday in a mass shooting in Dayton, Ohio.

In 2008, Walmart and a coalition of Mayors Against Illegal Guns developed a 10-point plan to keep guns from falling into the wrong hands. Does that Walmart allow firearms in their store? It does not, however, release data on gun sales. Walmart doesn't disclose how much revenue it generates from guns and ammunition sales. But because of its biggest chain in the US, Walmart continues to face criticism for its firearm stocks.

Walmart confirmed to Reuters that it would not discontinue the sale of guns at its stores in light of the El Paso shooting or last week's MS shooting that killed two Walmart employees.

Walmart has made gun policy changes over the years, such as in 1993, when it stopped selling handguns.

Other gun control activists such as Texas Gun Sense President Ed Scruggs said Walmart, whose stores act as de facto community centers in rural America, could do more to educate children and teenagers on gun safety.

That same month, in a call to discuss earnings, the company's chief executive, Ed Stack, said lower sales during the quarter were partly driven by lower demand for "anything associated with hunting", including guns, ammunition, firearm accessories and hunting apparel.

Walmart again changed its gun policies in 2018 shortly after the Parkland, Florida, school shooting in February 2018 that killed 17 students and staff members.

Representatives for the National Rifle Association, Everytown for Gun Safety and Brady, a gun violence prevention advocacy group, did not immediately respond to ABC News' request for comment.

Walmart is one of the largest sellers of guns and ammunition, the Post reported, with guns on sale at half of its 4,750 US stores, including Arkansas.
