Police in Squamish, B-C say someone may have intentionally cut a gondola cable at the popular tourist attraction known as the Sea To Sky Gondola.

"We believe the cables were cut and this was a deliberate act of vandalism", Inspector Kara Triance told CBC News.

The gondola operator said in a statement that they received an alert at 4:30 a.m. on Saturday that a haul rope had fallen for the Sea to Sky Gondola and the lift was inoperable.

"The Sea to Sky Gondola has been a great addition to Squamish's tourism industry and has been very successful at delivering on quality experiences for their guests since they opened", said Tourism Squamish executive director Lesley Weeks in a statement.

"The gondola is now closed and we will provide updates as they become available", he said. "At this time, it's a crime scene".

On Saturday, nearly all of the 30 gondola cars that were attached to the cable came crashing to the ground, staff told CBC News.

Ashley MacKay said authorities are inspecting the full length of the cable. "All my couples have chosen the Sea to Sky Gondola because of the incredible views and I would like to find something that can come close to that", Caroline Hyatt said in a Facebook posting.

"This type of incident resonates with everyone, as we all recognize the impact of what could have happened", she said.

"We are now assessing the damage but our preliminary assessment suggests that a cable was cut". That includes hikers, climbers and campers who were in the areas of the Sea to Sky Gondola as well as the Stawamus Chief Provincial Park between 4:00 am and 9:00 am this morning'.

RCMP are requesting that people stay away from the area, including nearby outdoor trails, and the gondola remains closed. Each of the 31 cars holds eight people.

"The Sea to Sky Gondola is CLOSED for the foreseeable future due to a major lift incident".

Police said that technical safety experts were assessing the line.

Officers are now working at the scene with Technical Safety BC and manufacturers Doppelmayr. The gondola is now closed.

After passengers take the 10-minute ride up 885 metres above sea level, they can go on hikes or eat at one of the food outlets.
