Andreescu advances to 3rd round at Rogers Cup with marathon three-setter

Pliskova downs Kontaveit to advance to quarterfinals at Rogers Cup Aug 08 2019

"Tennis players don't really get too dirty and ugly on the court".

ATP's world No. 27 Bianca Andreescu has battled her way all the way to the Rogers Cup semifinals.

Andreescu then turned her back to cameras to point to the slogan on the back of her sweatshirt laughing "I'm going to 'just do it!'"

There was a scary moment in the second set when the American ran into the net post while trying to chase down an Osaka drop shot but, despite nursing her right arm, Williams confirmed that no serious damage had been done.

Sofia Kenin looked to close the match in straight sets as she broke Elina Svitolina early in the second set.

Andreescu got there by beating the tournament's third seed, Karolína Plíšková, which came just 24 hours after she knocked off the tournament's fifth seed, Kiki Bertens.

"Being able to accomplish what I've accomplished and knowing that a lot of these young athletes are watching is something really special", said Andreescu, who remembers being spellbound watching Belinda Bencic's epic title run here in 2015 as a fan. Pliskova would have had a chance to overtake her and Osaka had she reached the Toronto final. With Pliskova's greatest strength neutralized, Andreescu dominated all facets of the game in the first set for a quick 6-0 win. Andreescu caught the eye of her parents in the stands and pointed at her groin as she made her way off the court. "And I felt it was pretty more mental today".

In two lengthy games to start the third set, Andreescu continued to struggle with obvious pain in her legs, grimacing after lengthy rallies forced her to sprint all over the court. But she shook off the fatigue to break Kasatkina twice - first to tie it 5-all, then again for the 7-5 victory after hitting a trio of big forehand winners in the final game.

"It's hard not to focus on that when it's hurting at every point", said Andreescu. "I'm just going to go out there, try to enjoy myself, and give it all".

After roaring through her opening set to put up the unlikeliest of bagels, and appearing destined to land in the semifinal round easily, the script was flipped entirely.

Unlike at Flushing Meadows a year ago, where Osaka won her first Grand Slam title, there were no fiery exchanges with the umpire, no smashed rackets, no point or game penalties - just a rock-solid performance from Williams.

In the semi-finals Williams will face Czech qualifier Marie Bouzkova, who advanced when Wimbledon champion Simona Halep retired with Achilles tendon trouble after dropping their first set 6-4.

Ottawa's Gabriela Dabrowski and partner Xu Yifan of China beat Estonia's Anett Kontaveit and Hungary's Timea Babos 6-7 (0), 7-6 (5), 10-3 in the doubles quarterfinals.
