ABC to tackle ‘Little Mermaid’ with live production

The Little Mermaid Live!, Starring Rise Alum Auli'i Cravalho, a Go at ABC

Auli'i Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the Disney film of the same name, will star as the mermaid, Ariel, while Queen Latifah will play the villainous sea witch Ursula.

The network originally had plans in 2017 for a musical of The Little Mermaid but canceled those plans a few months later due to high costs.

The special will honor and celebrate the animated classic with performances from a live cast interwoven into the broadcast of the original feature film. We need details, people!

While you may be thinking that there are one too many Ariels at the moment, ABC isn't anxious about competing with Disney's live-action film. Oscar (R)-nominated, and GRAMMY (R), Golden Globe (R) and Emmy (R) Award-winning R&B artist, actor and producer Queen Latifah is set to play Ursula.

The Wrap says this live television event will be a production that will feature intricate sets and costumes. Take that idea, reverse it, and that's The Little Mermaid in a nutshell. Not every character in The Little Mermaid has their own musical performance, so it is why to know that The Little Mermaid Live! will be incorporating two or three songs from the Broadway musical to give those characters their time to shine.

According to Deadline, the special's music will combine the efforts of the film's composer and lyricist, Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, as well as the input of Glenn Slater, lyricist for the Broadway adaptation. Auli'i Cravalho, who is of Hawaiian and Puerto Rican descent, will play the main role in the musical that will air this November.
