William Saliba: Spurs rival Arsenal for Saint-Etienne defender

William Saliba

Tottenham may be trying to hijack the William Saliba deal but that does not mean that Arsenal will just roll over every time their bitter rivals are on the scene.

However, Tottenham have made a last-ditch attempt to secure the services of the France Under-20 global by offering a marginally better deal.

The main obstacle for Arsenal would be Champions League football, both Juve and Spurs can offer that, we cannot and if all three clubs were to meet his personal demands then lack of participation in Europe's premier competition would put us at a severe disadvantage.

The Gunners were set to secure a 30m euro (£27m) deal for the 18-year-old that was to see him loaned back to the Ligue 1 club next season.

Unai Emery is in desperate need of a new centre-back to join his squad, so they should leave Spurs to finalise this deal and go in search of someone who can link up with the first-team immediately.

Bouhafsi further implied that Arsenal's difficulty in agreeing add-ons with Saint-Etienne was the reason the deal had not been completed.

Arsenal had delved deep in negotiations for the €30m rated defender but Saint-Étienne were unable to accept the payment structure suggested by Arsenal.

Spurs may well be preparing for life without Toby Alderweireld.

With a £25m release clause, the centre-back has been linked with Manchester United but it is believed the Red Devils are looking for a younger option.
