Volkswagen ID R smashes Goodwood hill climb record with 39.9-second run

Volkswagen ID R Nürburgring

Volkswagen now lays claim to the fastest time ever up to Goodwood hill climb, thanks to an astonishing run from its all-electric ID.R at the Festival of Speed.

The previous standard for the event at the Goodwood Festival of Speed was set in 1999 by Nick Heidfeld in a McLaren-Mercedes MP4/13.

Yikes. Volkswagen has broken the Goodwood hillclimb record, with the ID.

With one day of the 2019 Festival remaining, there's every chance Dumas will get another chance to go even faster, although a chance of rain may prevent further improvements.

The Volkswagen I.D. R also holds the record at Pikes Peak and the electric auto record at the Nurburgring.

Romain Dumas clocked a time of 39.90 in the VW I.D.

This only weeks after the same ID.R vehicle set a record as the quickest auto out of both electric and internal combustion vehicles at Pikes Peak. The previous record was set in 2017 by Peter Dumbreck, who was driving a Nio electric vehicle.

This year, two new records have been shattered by the ID R. One's the Nurburgring-Nordschleife emission-free record and the other is the Goodwood all-time record.

Although the same basic auto that competed at Pikes Peak and the Nurburgring, VW made some changes to the ID.R in preparation for the festival's 1.86 km track. It had a smaller battery, which reduced its overall weight, while the power output had also been optimized. The company has made a decision to prepare some of them for production, beginning with the ID.3. 3 hatchback is the first model to be built on the automaker's new Modular Electric Drive Toolkit, or MEB, electric-car architecture. The automaker's goal is to sell 1 million electric vehicles annually by 2025.

Bottom line: Electric vehicles are the future of the automotive industry and VW just proved it again with a record-setting run up the famed hill climb.
