Vancouver shaken by magnitude 4.6 natural disaster off coast of Washington State

Earthquake rattles Washington, followed by aftershock

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported a 4.6 magnitude natural disaster rattled the Three Lakes area, about 40 miles northeast of Seattle.

Less than an hour after Monroe felt two earthquakes, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, a magnitude 2.5 natural disaster occurred near Royal City at around 3:45 a.m. on July 12. An aftershock measuring 3.5 was measured minutes later in Monroe, Wash.

"It's been widely felt throughout the Seattle area", said Paul Caruso, a USGS geophysicist. "We are spooked and still awake", Rob Fuhriman told KIRO TV.

The natural disaster was relatively shallow, but according to the USGS map, it was felt all the way to the Canadian border. The agency stated that it was 3.1 kilometers down.

KIRO reports the quake is the largest to hit the region since the 6.8 M 2001 Nisqually natural disaster.

Caruso said the natural disaster was the product of a thrust fault, in which one side of a fault pushes upward in relation to its opposite side.

Joan Gomberg, a USGS seismologist and affiliate faculty member at the University of Washington, said "the likelihood of a bigger one is small".

There isn't a connection between this quake and the ones that rocked California earlier this month, Steele said.
