Trump's Withdrawal from Iran Nuclear Deal Was 'Diplomatic Vandalism'

In the latest leaked cables to his government, Darroch said the Trump administration was "set upon an act of diplomatic vandalism, seemingly for ideological and personality reasons - it was Obama's deal", the newspaper reported, referring to the Iranian pact.

His reassurance appeared to represent a U-turn from a statement Basu had issued less than 24 hours earlier in which he warned the "media not to publish leaked government documents that may already be in their possession, or which may be offered to them, and to turn them over to the police or give them back to their rightful owner, Her Majesty's government".

Britain's ambassador to the USA said Donald Trump abandoned the Iran nuclear deal in an "act of diplomatic vandalism" because it was agreed by his predecessor Barack Obama, according to the latest leaked cables.

Kim Darroch has since been forced to resign from his post after his views of an "inept" and "dysfunctional" Trump government hit the newspapers last week and attracted direct social media attacks from the US President.

He mentioned Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, who said in a tweet on Wednesday that Darroch "always understood the strength of President Trump and referred to him as the "Terminator" who is indestructible and will most likely be reelected".

"However, we have also been told the publication of these specific documents - now knowing they may be a breach of the Official Secrets Act - could also constitute a criminal offence and one that carries no public interest defence", he said.

The former ambassador made his decision to step down after seeing that Johnson, the current frontrunner to replace Theresa May as British prime minister, had refused to support him during Tuesday night's leadership debate, a British government official confirmed to CNN. The perpetrator should face the consequences of their actions. "But they've got to stop their leaking problems there, just like they have to stop them in our country".

The incident has caused the British government considerable embarrassment, especially considering that the partnership between the two countries was just trumpeted during Trump's state visit to the United Kingdom in early June.

They say they want editors to know publishing them may be against the law because there is a criminal investigation underway into whether the original leak violated the Officials Secret Act.

The favourite to become the next Prime Minister Boris Johnson was heckled during a hustings event.

As counterterrorism officers continue to investigate who leaked Sir Kim Darroch's diplomatic cables, Basu's climbdown was interpreted as an attempt to dampen down the row.

Speaking to Andrew Pierce on LBC, Mr Grieve said: "I think we're heading for a very bad place with Boris Johnson and that for me was quite a defining moment of an individual who has no responsibility except to himself".

The cable was part of a second batch of leaked memos published by the Mail on Sunday, the first of which led to the resignation of Darroch on 10 July.
