Trump rips tech firms at 'free speech' summit

Twitter removed several fake accounts past year and in the process, Trump also lost almost 3 lakh followers.

Instead, the invite list included numerous inflammatory online types, including right-wing Project Veritas founder James O'Keefe, pro-Trump activist Bill Mitchell and college Republican activist Charlie Kirk. "The fact that some of the most extreme voices on social media are coming to the White House, and they get a forum to complain about how often they're retweeted, and that the actual platform companies aren't even invited, smacks of the absurd". Social Media Summit highlights partisan approaches to Tech MORE on Thursday that point to its tendency to have typos in tweets and tell participants at a White House meeting of conservative social media personalities that "fingers aren't as good as brains".

As the summit was about to begin on Thursday, Twitter went down for almost an hour.

The specifics of what was discussed are thin on the ground right now, but this is a clear shot across the bows of social media companies.

And Trump threatened additional scrutiny to come, promising to bring big tech companies to Washington for an upcoming meeting while directing federal agencies to explore "all regulatory and legislative solutions to protect free speech".

Trump has a following of about 62 million people on Twitter despite his claims that the company makes it hard for people to follow him.

During Thursday's summit, Trump also crowed about how engagement on his tweets explodes "like a rocket" after he posts them - as opposed to more traditional White House press releases. Two of the people said Parler in particular isn't ready.

"I'll tell you a lot of bad things are happening". No tech representatives were invited to the summit but the president added he plans to hold a meeting for major social media platforms later this month.

The tool comes in the wake of several Republicans slamming Facebook and Twitter for censoring conservative speech on both the platforms.

"We hardly do press releases anymore because if I put out on social media a statement, like I'm going to in a little while and something totally unrelated but a very important statement, now they're going insane", explained the United States president.

Trump has repeatedly claimed that firms such as Facebook, Google and Twitter - who were not invited to the summit - discriminate against him and his supporters, even though his own Twitter account has almost 62 million followers.

Sites like Twitter and YouTube, for example, allow actual terrorists, such as the Palestinian group Hamas, to maintain a large presence while blocking American patriots who question liberal dogma concerning Second Amendment rights by claiming it advocates violence.

Trump a couple of times has threatened retaliatory action related to free speech.

Numerous attendees have increasingly accused social media companies of attempting to hamper their growth and reach.

Trump also invited lawmakers including Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., and Sen. However Trump was interrupted during his address by a fly, which he admitted he doesn't like.
