Tracking heat and the remnants of Barry this week

Barry Becomes a Hurricane Barrels Toward Louisiana Coast

Barry - which weakened to a tropical depression Sunday as it moved slowly north across Louisiana and into Arkansas - had put Louisiana on high alert for much of the weekend with a threat of epic flooding.

Barry, which made landfall as a category 1 hurricane on Saturday then quickly weakened to a tropical storm, was 15 miles (25 km) east-southeast of Shreveport with maximum sustained winds of 40 miles (65 km) per hour early Sunday afternoon.

Still, the storm's first wave had not inundated New Orleans as feared, with the city experiencing moderate rain Saturday.

"This rainfall is expected to lead to unsafe, life-threatening flooding", forecasters wrote in an advisory Sunday morning.

Sixty-five miles southeast of New Orleans in Plaquemines Parish, part of which lies below sea level, residents received mandatory evacuation orders ahead of Barry's impact.

Barry is still hanging in there as a tropical storm.

"This was a storm that clearly could have turned out differetly, in an unexpected way", he said. But a levee in Terrebonne Parish was overtopped by water for part of the day, officials said.

Unlike Barry, the storms did not have names, but they, nonetheless, flooded homes and farm land across an enormous swath of the Central U.S. It's the latest, and one of the most extreme, examples of an uptick in the number of extreme rain events in many parts of the the earth gets hotter.

About 75,000 customers in Louisiana, 4,000 customers in MS and another 1,800 customers in Arkansas were without power Sunday evening, according to

National Hurricane Center Director Ken Graham, in a storm update on Facebook Live, pointed to long stretches along the coast expecting a storm surge of 6 feet or higher, along with the torrential rain. "Please use caution if you are traveling in that area this morning!" the National Weather Service Office in Jackson, Mississippi, said on Twitter.

Elsewhere, the tropical Atlantic is covered with Saharan dust, which we can see in South Florida in the hazy skies. The couple, 72 and 70-years-old respectively, walked a mile in the rain from their trailer to a shelter at a Baton Rouge middle school only to be told that they could not bring in their two cats and small dog.

The storm surge at the coast from south central Louisiana to southern MS pushed water 3 to 6 feet above normally dry land, with isolated reports over 7 feet.

At least a dozen people had to be rescued after becoming stranded on Isle de Jean Charles, a remote island within Terrebonne Parish.

The water from this spring's rains flowed downstream, into the Mississippi River and down toward the Gulf of Mexico.

Its heaviest rain on Saturday and Saturday night focused in southern MS and Alabama where up to three to seven inches fell. Still, city officials said a flash flood watch had been extended until Sunday evening.
