Steve Bruce 'resigns as Sheffield Wednesday boss' ahead of Newcastle move

Steve Bruce took charge of Sheffield Wednesday's 3-1 pre-season friendly win against Lincoln City on Sunday

Steve Bruce has sensationally resigned from his role at Sheffield Wednesday, according to the Northern Echo, paving way for his installation as Newcastle manager.

Bruce is expected to be brought to St James' Park as the replacement for Rafa Benitez - who left the club this summer after failing to agree on a new contract - and speculation Bruce has resigned from his post at Sheffield Wednesday has emerged on Monday.

Steve Bruce's Sheffield Wednesday future could be resolved imminently.

The Owls are believed to want a substantial seven-figure settlement for a manager who only took charge at Hillsborough in February.

Ex-England global Waddle added on the choices made by Newcastle and former Manchester United defender Bruce: "I would have thought that Old Trafford would have been the job he has always wanted". He steered Wednesday to 12th place last season.

"Don't get me wrong, Newcastle are a huge club, but he's having to follow Benitez, who has been one of the most popular managers they've ever had".

SunSport revealed last week that Bruce had met Newcastle managing director Lee Charnley for talks, before he then told the Championship side he wanted to leave.

Bruce remains favourite to take charge of his boyhood club, walking into a tough situation with a section of the fans up in arms. "For me there's nothing to talk about until the two clubs reach some sort of compromise".
