Spider-Man snags $185.1M to rule weekend box office

Tom Holland as Peter Parker in a still from Spider-Man Far From Home

"Spider-Man: Far From Home" got a head start by opening on Tuesday ahead of Independence Day, but it collected US$93 million over the traditional three-day weekend.

The film set an all-time opening six-day record for Sony Pictures, plus the best six-day opening for any Spider-Man film. Far From Home, which opened overseas before landing in the US, has grossed $580 million worldwide in 10 days of release.

As mentioned, the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home will catapult Spidey and his closest friends and family members into unsafe territories, and it will be exciting to find out where Marvel and Sony want to take the characters.

The strong performance of "Far From Home", which cost approximately $160 million to produce, along with the sustained interest in holdovers like "Toy Story 4", "Yesterday", "Annabelle Comes Home" and "Aladdin", helped the industry knock down the deficit compared with this time past year about a percentage point.

Danny Boyle's Beatles-inspired movie Yesterday stayed in third place, dipping just 36.8% and bringing in $10.75 million, giving it a $36.8 million domestic total. Taking an estimated $10.9 million for its five-day weekend, Midsommar is the first horror since Jordan Peele's Us to be worthy of the hype.

The Warner Bros. "Conjuring" spinoff sequel "Annabelle Comes Home" snagged $10.8 million in its second weekend.

Rounding out the top five is Disney's "Aladdin", which added $7 million in its seventh weekend in theaters.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at US and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore.

Boosted by solid reviews, "Spider-Man: Far From Home" also benefited as the must-see follow-up to the epic finale that was "Avengers: Endgame".

"Toy Story 4", $34.3 million ($43.1 million international). That's a stellar start to be sure, but a drop from the US$117 million debut of its predecessor, 2017's "Spider-Man: Homecoming". Obviously, these aren't Avengers: Endgame numbers (not that anyone was expecting them to be), but it marks as yet another unqualified success from Marvel Studios.

For the uninitiated, Kraven is a villain-of-sorts who prides himself on hunting down various prey, including the likes of Spider-Man.
