Some of $175,000 returned after money melee on I-285

Drivers stop on Atlanta interstate to grab $175,000 that fell from armored truck

An armored truck's side door flew open while it was going down an Atlanta interstate on Tuesday night, spilling hundreds of thousands of dollars out onto the roadway - and making it the best day ever for passing drivers.

The incident happened around 8 p.m. on the westbound lanes of I-285 near the Ashford Dunwoody Road interchange in DeKalb County.

The door of an armored vehicle that was traveling along the interstate came loose and opened, sending piles of money into the air. Taking the money was technically theft, the department wrote on Facebook, though they could "certainly understand the temptation".

When officers arrived, the drivers had already left the scene, Sgt. Robert Parsons, with Dunwoody police, told the Times.

"I've seen it in the movies", he said.

Police said that five people had returned money by Wednesday night and about $4,400 has been recovered, according to the station. "This is the first one I can think of.". Dunwoody Police shared with FOX 5 News one of many videos that have been circulating on social media.

For those who picked up cash and kept it for themselves, charges could include theft of lost or mislaid property and could be a felony or misdemeanor, depending on the amount.

Investigators say they will be looking at license plates from videos of the incident posted online.

Lewis told WXIA that while he thought about what the money could do for his family, he ultimately chose to return it because it wasn't worth the legal trouble.

Judging from footage taken at the scene, it seems most people decided the right thing to do was to get out of their cars and make hay while the sun shined, in some kind of freaky motorway-based version of The Crystal Maze. "But those people who do have it, they need to bring it back".
