Senators introduce bill requiring equal pay for men, women’s teams

The U.S. women’s soccer team celebrates after winning the Women’s World Cup final Sunday in France

Before the start of the ticker tape parade celebrating the USA women's soccer team's World Cup win on Wednesday morning, Gov. Andrew Cuomo took to Twitter to announce another victory for women: his signing of "new pay equity legislation". What's more, while the US women's team split the World Cup championship prize money of $4 million in 2019, the French men's team divided up a total of $38 million in prize money (well over $1 million per player) for winning the World Cup title in 2018. Following the team's triumph at the 2019 Women's World Cup with a 2-0 win over the Netherlands on Sunday, the USWNT players will be honored in a parade up the Canyon of Heroes. These are women's soccer players. "It was like, this World Cup win is so much more than what was on the field".

All together, members of the USA women's team might make around $400,000 each in 2019, and some star players with lucrative endorsement deals could earn over $1 million.

The U.S. women's national team has received some powerful backing in the fight for equal pay.

It is unclear whether Senator's Manchin's bill will pass, but it is clear that Democrats will not let up on this complicated issue of pay equality in soccer to the point of being willing to hold the 2026 World Cup hostage to simplified social justice demands.

"But from here on out, we'll just be known as America's team".

United States' Megan Rapinoe scores the opening goal from a penalty shot during the Women's World Cup final soccer match on July 7, 2019. If anything, the men should get paid less. A lawsuit was filed by five players in 2016, with another filed by all 28 members of the team in the months leading up to the 2019 World Cup.

She also reiterated that she would not be going to the White House, saying on CNN's Anderson Cooper 360: "I would not go and every teammate that I've talked to explicitly about it would not go".

Gov. Cuomo stole the thunder from Mayor de Blasio on Wednesday when he signed legislation guaranteeing equal pay - even as Hizzoner said in an interview that he would sign an executive order to do the same if elected president. However, the U.S. Soccer Federation argues that the gap in total prize money is based on the amount that FIFA provides and so claims that it is unfair to be held accountable for FIFA's decision. They play the same game that the men's soccer players play.

If the women's team wants to make the same amount of money as their male counterparts then something has got to give.

"You don't see FIFA pressuring other federations to invest more in the women's soccer game", she says. "I mean, that's ultimately the building block you build on".

A bipartisan resolution was introduced Wednesday by U.S. Sen. "New Yorkers - all 19 million - we stand united: Equal rights, men, women".

The statement incurred an accusatory response from Mr Trump: "Megan should never disrespect our Country, the White House, or our Flag, especially since so much has been done for her and the team". "At this moment, they are cultural icons and should be paid as such".
